Creating a Fire-Safe Yard: Tips for Okanagan Homeowners

    Fire-Safe Landscaping in Okanagan

Wildfire is a real part of summer in the Okanagan, and the area immediately around your home plays a big role in how well it holds up. The good news is that a few thoughtful changes to your yard can meaningfully reduce risk. No yard is ever fireproof, but a fire smart one gives your home a far better chance.

Start With the Area Closest to Your Home

The first metre and a half around your house matters most. Keep this zone lean, clean, and free of anything that burns easily. Swap wood mulch and bark against the foundation for gravel, rock, or pavers, move firewood piles and propane tanks well away from the walls, and avoid planting dense, woody shrubs right up against the siding.

Clean Up Debris and Reduce Fuel

Dead leaves, dry needles, and fallen branches are easy ignition points. Rake them up regularly, clear your gutters and roof, and sweep out the spaces under decks and stairs where debris collects. Keep grass mowed and watered through the dry months, and remove dead vegetation as you spot it.

    Space and Prune Your Plantings

Fire spreads quickly when plants grow into one another. Give trees and shrubs room to breathe, prune lower branches so flames cannot climb from the ground into the canopy, and keep branches from overhanging the roof. Breaking up continuous vegetation with patios, walkways, or gravel beds slows a fire's path toward the house.

    Choose Fire Smart Plants

Some plants resist fire far better than others. Well watered, high moisture plants such as deciduous trees, leafy perennials, and many groundcovers are good choices, while resinous evergreens like junipers, cedars, and mugo pines are best kept away from the home. Keeping plants healthy and hydrated is just as important as choosing the right ones.

Keep It Up Through the Season

Fire safety is not a one time project. A quick walk around the yard every few weeks, regular watering, and ongoing cleanup keep your defences strong through the hottest, driest part of the year.
